BlackBerry MediaSync for OS X

Well BlackBerry released a preview of MediaSync for OS X, while I have not tried it yet, I hear that it can screw up 3rd party syncing options such as PocketMac or MissingSync.

Gem TD Warcraft 3

Well one of my friends recently brought me back into the engrossing world of tower defense. We played multiple maps, but my favorite by far was Gem TD. It is an interesting take on tower defense. It is similar to many by creation of a maze to send the creeps through before reaching their target, however they have to reach 6 different arrows in order before reaching the final position. In Gem TD, you have to lie out 5 gems per round, then you pick which one you want to keep. The other 4 become mazing rocks to help create your maze.

My first time playing I didn’t do great but I didn’t lose either. However now that I’ve played through 3 times, I have greatly improved my strategy and on easy, I have done 282,502 damage to the final damage test.

Finally, I have made a checklist for towers in this game, because it does get very confusing what gems make which special towers.

Transferring Media to BlackBerry Storm with a Mac

Well I am a Mac user even though I have XP installed on Boot Camp, I tend to be too lazy to try and boot up and do things that way. Besides all my music and pictures are on my Mac hard drive. While it is possible to just pop out your MicroSD card and use the converter and a card reader to put it on your computer, you can also send media through Bluetooth.

I found this to be extremely helpful when I just wanted to transfer one song over to my Storm without restarting or pulling the media card. However, there is a certain way you have to do it.

On your BlackBerry Storm, you have to go to the media app, highlight whatever kind of media you want to receive from your Mac. If you want music, highlight Music, then click “Receive Using Bluetooth”.

After that you can send it easily to your device!

Well today Apple has released an OS update that many have been waiting for! This update has many modifications to Apple's core programs, such as iCal, Mail, and Safari.

BlackBerry Storm OTA Updates!

Well the new Storm update has been available for about a week now and it is awesome! It fixed a lot of little bugs like the sometimes temperamental accelerometer. You can download it now over the air.

To access this go to Options ->Advanced Options -> Wireless Upgrade

Wireless Upgrade is at the very bottom of the Advanced Options List, however if you are like me, it initially does not show.

There is a fix for this though!

To make it appear you need to go to Options -> Advanced Options -> Service Book

Then HIGHLIGHT Provisioning [OTASL]

While highlighted, click the BlackBerry button to pull up the menu

Now go to Delete, when it asks are you sure, click Delete

Now hit the Blackberry Button again and click Undelete

For some the Upgrade now appears, however I had to do a reboot and it was there!

Hope that helps solve the confusion of the OTA update!

BlackBerry Storm – Epic in a Phone

Well I finally got my BlackBerry Storm, and all I can say is, it’s AWESOME! It’s everything I expected to be and more. It may have a few little bugs but hey what phones don’t when they first come out. Yes people complain, “there are no apps, we want apps” well think about it. Did the iPhone have apps when it came out…no, not at all. Those came out more than a year later with the release of the iPhone 3G. You can’t expect BlackBerry to just magically create and awesome phone and a full on app store, while making the BlackBerry Storm’s firmware perfect. Well you can, but if that was to happen, the phone would never be released! They may have brought it out one update too soon, but hey we’re lucky now we can update things, unlike in the past where once you got a phone, you never updated it…ever.

I have used my iPod Touch a ton. I used it so much I would carry it around with me in my pocket with my other phone. I knew I needed to get a smart phone and without the desire to switch carriers, the announcement of the Storm was amazing to hear. Unfortunately, the Storms were way under shipped so I had to check back daily, and I finally got it last Tuesday! Opening the box, and seeing the amazing design, all black, was awesome. I have now gotten so used to using my phone for music and calendar and all that, that I forgot my iPod Touch at home when I came back up, and I didn’t realize I left it there for an entire week!

Now to reviewing the device. I love it. It did take me about a week to get used to typing on it, and now I type faster on it than on my iPod Touch. When I show my phone to people they try just tapping and the typical response is “oh this phone sucks, it doesn’t respond to me clicking it”. I then tell them to push the button and they are always astonished about how weird it is. Unfortunately now, so many are used to the iPhone, they aren’t willing to change or accept the change the Storm made, which is why many people dislike the device. Everything has worked perfectly. Even on my Mac, without using bootcamp, I can sync it thru VMWare Fusion to the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. I now have my calendars syncing thru iCal to Google Calendar to my Phone, all wirelessly, all automatically updating. If one changes, it will reach all others in under 15 minutes, however you can always force sync it. One complaint I have is that it takes a freaking long time to power on, however you never really need to turn the phone off. I’ve actually heard that you shouldn’t turn off the phone from various sources. Documents to Go, an app that comes on the phone, doesn’t like reading my documents from my Mac, but that isn’t a huge deal to me. Texting is a breeze, syncing contacts works amazingly well. The browser may run slow at times, but I mean it’s a mobile device, you can’t expect T1 speeds on it! I hope you enjoyed my review, if you ever try one, give it time, don’t expect the iPhone experience because it isn’t an iPhone, it is a totally different phone than you have probably ever experienced!

Round Up of Twitter Apps!

Well after my research done and my trials with many different twitter clients I now have a list for every one of twitter clients and my opinion of each!

Twitterific – Free with ads, $14.95 for full version

A small minimalistic twitter client with many great features, such as growl support when new tweets arrive and color-coding for direct messages and replies. Gives the basic function of allowing you to tweet from inside of it. It collapses nicely into the menu bar for when you do not want to view it, however when you receive new tweets it does reappear, little annoying but manageable. Unfortunately, there is a price tag on this twitter app, but the free version works just as well, except for the ads. It is a great app if you want something small, lightweight and gets the job done while looking good!

TweetDeck - Free

Expanded View

Single Column

This is my twitter app of choice. It may be large, however I have an entire space dedicated to it. It does a very good job of separating direct messages and replies into different columns. It runs on Adobe Air and is extremely lightweight. You can force update your tweets and send new tweets with this. It also provides automatic link shortening which is very handy when linking to my blog or elsewhere. There are many newly added features to TweetDeck that I don’t use yet because I just updated my TweetDeck. I recommend this app if you want a twitter app to do it all, but don’t mind its size. My one small complaint about this app is when you get a new tweet it just updates saying you have a new tweet and makes TweetDeck the targeted application, but this is very minor.

Twhirl - Free

Another twitter app that uses the Adobe Air platform. I used to use this app a lot, however TweetDeck replaced it. This app is very similar to TweetDeck and has many of the same features. It has its own notification system which you can customize to your liking. It does not update as frequently as TweetDeck does, which is one of my primary reasons for switching, however it’s size is much more comparable to that of Twitterific which is a plus. Twhirl also features link shortening along with many other useful tricks. I recommend this if TweetDeck is too large for your tastes and Twitterific is too minimalistic.

Hahlo

Designed to be used primarily for mobile devices such as an iPhone, it still works very well as a browser based twitter client. It is a very nice looking app, with a minimalistic theme. It does the essentials great for on the go tweeting. Hahlo and Ping.FM, which I will discuss later, are my two main ways to tweet on the go. I recommend using it on your iPhone or iPod Touch or even creating a fluid app of it. If you need help creating a fluid app of Hahlo visit http://fluidapp.com/ .

Ping.FM

This is not exactly a twitter client, but a twitter updater. You can use it to update your twitter status at the same time you update your facebook, myspace, or many more statuses. You can also use it to create a new blog post. It is available to use at ping.fm all you have to do is make an account and put in your information for whatever sites you want it to update! They have pseudo texting support by texting an email or if your mobile device has email, you can just email it. Ping.fm also has AIM bots for quick and easy status updates. If you are lazy and like to update all your statuses at once, ping.fm is the way to go!

TweetGrid

Shown to me by a fellow twitter user, TweetGrid is a very well designed web based twitter app. It is completely customizable. You choose your grid size from 1x1 to 3x3. Within this you can edit the sizes of columns and rows to customize to your liking. Once inside, you can view specific people’s tweets, everyone’s, and even update your own with rapid updating. If you just want something that works and gets the job done, TweetGrid is for you!

Wrap Up

Basically each of these twitter apps target a different audience.

If you want an extremely minimalist app for your desktop use Twitterific
If you want everything twitter has to offer plus more for your desktop use TweetDeck
If you want a combo of the last two use twhirl
If you want to use twitter on your iPhone or other mobile device use Hahlo
If you want to update all of your sites with a status use Ping.FM
If you want a full desktop experience in your web browser, while customizing it all use TweetGrid

Well sadly it's the end of the road for the amazing Mars Phoenix Lander :( Sad news indeed for such an amazing journey. Finding the water on Mars was only one of many accomplishments, but I believe posting one of it's final tweets is all but necessary:

So I thought Ravenholm was bad...

So I'm walking along with my new pheropod! Oh yay. Ya basically now all the antlions treat me as their awesome leader and basically do my busy work for me, aka killing the combine. I'm told I have to go to this Nova Prospekt place, after Ravenholm how bad could it be?!? So for one it's supposedly well it is a super high security prison and ya I have to kill all the defenses, but I have my awesome antlion buddies who just do my bidding even if they die doing it, oh and they keep respawning :) I finally get in but sadly my antlion buddies cant follow me :(

I'm walking through ready to kill some combine and own peoples, but I just keep walking thru. Dead people lay of the ground, I think maybe they're zombies, nope they're dead. Keep on walking, alone, all...alone. Turns out this place gives me more of the creeps because it's you and just you that's it. The occasional turret who shoots at you because they're "automated" ya sure automated turrets, hmm doubt it but ok. So ya I could have a party with myself in this place, it's just freaking empty. What scares me most is just that sense of anticipation that oh look I turn a corner there's something to kill, but turning the corner is when I get freaked. So corner after corner, no freaking guys to kill.

Next however I jump out of my seat because my antlion buds found a way in and they pop out of the ground, next thing I know I've killed 10 of them forgetting they're my friends. Such loyalty these creatures have. I'll leave you with the loneliness I felt in Nova Prospekt, you, alone, you yourself and you? Ya it's just you maybe a "automated turret" or your antlion "friends" but ya just you. Have fun being lonely. I'll comment more on my journey later!

Ravenholm...Part 2

Well I leave Ravenholm, well the main part to follow Mr. creepy guy into the best place to go to avoid zombies. Well let's just say I was extremely sarcastic because he leads me into a freaking graveyard!!! First thing that I see is about 6 spider zombies hauling ass onto of a cliff towards us, but hey they're on a cliff, they can't reach us. How wrong I was! They hurt badly both physically but emotionally. Once those buggers were finished off I got to experience more fun, mobs of zombies! Oh yay like 20 zombies coming towards you, kinda freaky, but anyways I created a game to see how many zombies I could kill with 1 saw blade shot, my record is 5 so far. But anyways more zombies keep coming to kill me and finally you think you're done but wait, you hear that awful groan of the annoying toxic zombie. I then unleash pretty much all the ammo I have to kill the annoyance and then mr creepy guy tells me go into the mines, it's the way out. Yay the way out!

So in I go, jumping down the cool mine shaft, cause jumping's fun. Gotta be careful though, otherwise you might fall to your death, gotta love that. Anyways I get to the almost bottom and I feel like I'm in a snake pit except with headcrabs! A FREAKING TON OF HEADCRABS! So I basically use all my magnum ammo to pick them off and the jump down trying to avoid these buggers and I finally get out of that part, but wait now I have to swim underwater to who knows where. Well I do it cause it's better than headcrab land and come out to none other than more zombies! WOO! So there's this "mine cart" that has a saw blade attached to it, mr creepy guy ha problems, lots of problems. So basically I kill all of them with no ammo then woo SUNLIGHT! I SEE SUN! Best feeling ever, so that was Ravenholm, scary place, but there's more to the story.

Skip like 2 Chapters

So I'm driving my dune buggy with its laser attachment on the front into a tunnel which usually tells me it's a loading tunnel, but oh god cars are all in front of my blocking my path. Ok no biggy, get out use gravity gun and ready go. Oh wait I hear something, OH %^@$! 4 Freaking Spider Zombies attack me plus crap loads of other zombies! Just when you thought you were zombie free this crap happens! Of course I have unlimited ammo, but no I forget that and end up having to crowbar half of the zombies, which was about 50 in this little area, oh ya its all dark too. And that's basically my zombie adventures so far. I'll keep you posted on any more scary zombie sightings!

Requiem for Ravenholm

Well last night I entered the terrors that anyone who has played Half Life 2 has experienced, going through Ravenholm. Stepping foot into the place where even Eli tries to tell me not to go, but of course I'm forced into the worst possible place ever. While walking through, I realize that there is no ammo at all. Seriously, no ammo ever. Nothing is more terrifying that striking a monkey zombie or as I refer to them, spider zombies, with a freaking crowbar because my last shotgun bullet went to attacking the toxic terror zombie who owns you like no other. Just when you think it can't get worse, three more spider zombies come barreling down on you jumping off of roofs, throwing one of infinite red explosive barrels, oh ya, one's on fire too which not only when he gets to me, I'm burning alive! I guess I skipped around there but ya that's just part of what makes it so terrifying.

Another part of the experience are pretty much these 2 sound bytes, which are pretty much the scariest music ever and send chills down your spine. They sure did when I just listened to them.

Next, you encounter the freaky, yet oddly religious? man who I'm forgetting his name but he calls himself the father of these poor creatures. He frees them from their suffering with sick, inhumane traps that half the time destroy you instead of their "intended targets". Oh ya and he needs to fix his freaking gondola. IT MOVES SO SLOWLY!!!!! God may actually like the man if he just helped you suffer less, but of course his 1 piece of help is giving you a shotgun right as you get to experience the pure joy of you first spider zombie in your face. One might think in your face is not possible, wait until you see it, it is possible and it happens.

Now you may think a lot of these things just aren't scary, but hey it's not so bad if you play on mute, while the sun is shining and the birds are chirping. But wait, I played thru this at night, speakers turned up at full volume just to give myself to full spine chilling experience. While I had a hard time sleeping last night, it was definitely worth it! Nothing quite comes close to feeling your hand tremble in fear with whats around the next corner or possibly up a ladder or below you, but it still scares you no matter where it comes from.

The last thing I can think of at the moment that just utterly makes you paranoid beyond no end is pretty much one thing Half Life is known for, the god damn headcrabs. These creepy little things are basically what create the zombies. As you can see in my video the zombies used to be real people until a headcrab latched itself onto the persons head and became in control of them. While fortunately for you, you have an HEV suit so you don't have to worry about it, but still headcrabs jumping out at you and hearing that little noise they make, makes you panic all the same. One other thing about noise, I'd say the worst noise of all is hearing the howl of a spider zombie. Just knowing one is coming scared the crap out of me, like really, no jokes here. It's scary stuff.

Well I think that's about all I have at this point, who knows maybe I'll make a part 2 to further discuss the terror but it's all I have for now!

Class Without Internet

Well today my international relations class, I could not get any internet! It’s terrible! I’m stuck writing a blog post in pages and pretty much bored doing it, but anyways. I have realized I would pretty much die if there was not internet at all. I’d never have anything to consume my time, I’d have to watch all of my TV shows with ads and watch them at their regularly scheduled time. It’s amazing how much I have become dependent on internet. I look up all my information now over google, I’ll watch most of the election coverage online. I’d lose a huge form of communication with friends without internet and I just hope that this class gets it’s wifi issues fixed because I can’t play a video game because I am afraid of it making any sounds. Basically if I make a sound I have to sing something in front of the class and that would not be good!

Rock Band

Well since one of my friends is giving me grief about only posting about USC football I decided to write something completely off of that topic and about 1 of my experiences this past week.

I brought up Rock Band 2 to my dorm to play and have fun with friends. Little did I know how much time I really would spend not just playing, but thinking about what I'm going to do next in the game. Finally I actually got to where the end was finally in sight, where I actually could play all over the world. Especially when I saw 1 of the venues with a ridiculous 400+ stars available at it. Yep that's the new endless setlist, a whopping 80+ song setlist. I've taken a little break so it is still not unlocked, but anyways back to the main point of this article.

I unlocked the Rolling Stone Hall of Fame Set and wanted to make sure I could pass all of the songs before I tried it on expert, because I didn't want to do all 7 songs and die on the last 1, which is exactly what would have happened. Anyways I decided to try Painkiller my first time and died in about a minute. I had never heard the song before and fast strumming parts plus repetitive parts equaled death for me. So I basically ended up spending about 4 hours working on the repetitive stuff, strumming and intro parts, and then trying to just survive through the solo which is truly what eventually happened.

I played it and got good enough to get to that damn 57% mark every time, it was just the case of whether I could make it thru the last part of the solo without dying. I finally made it thru once, then did it again for that 8 song set, but wow that song is hard. Here's a video of someone much better than me, but just gives you an idea of what I'm talking about!

Well I figured I would post something, so I'm just going to post some random things going on in my life haha.

The Washington game was pretty much an awesome victory, yet a boring one. Winning 56-0 makes that the third shutout in USC's season. It was an awesome homecoming though. Got to hang with friends, see my parents, and see a sweet victory.

I started running Google Analytics on my blog to see traffic more, but also got invited to 2 new torrent sites. I customized my dock to make it look way cooler.

Finally, I'm watching cool tv shows now, but sadly Heroes isn't on tonight. Boo.

Homecoming and Halloween

Well it's that time of year. Halloween! The time when everyone dresses up in crazy ridiculous costumes. I won't spoil my surprise for my costume, but maybe I'll have pictures tomorrow! I went with a few band people to the haunted house last night which was pretty fun. Even though I hate things jumping out at me. The graveyard part was pretty funny tho. Zombie girls looking for prom dates haha, it was scary. After that, we went to see 2 USC vocal groups sing a capella which was pretty freaking amazing! Not to mention yesterday I beat Rock Band 2 on expert which included the rediculously hard Painkiller! Now all I have left in that is the even more extreme endless setlist 2! AHHHHH

Another thing to add to the craziness of this week is that it's freaking HOMECOMING! BEAT THE HUSKIES! I get to have a nice busy night these next few days. Going to rallies both tonight and tomorrow, then a party tomorrow night! Then we definitely get to destroy the huskies!

Wow what an amazing episode Pandemic Part 2 was. It is working off the idea of Cloverfield with giant guinea pigs that attack South Park and the entire world. There were so many creative ideas in this and I laughed the hardest I have in a long time, especially with the different animals that invaded. I don't want to tell anymore because it's too good to be ruined. Craig is pretty funny in this and it keeps having lots of funny twists. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Here's the video

This game is a tower defense type game where one can chain towers to make devastating combos, good fun once you get used to it.

Castle Wars
Ahh wow this game took me back. An Arcomage off shoot, in case you don't know you non gamers, Arcomage was a minigame in Might and Magic and was pretty much my favorite thing. Basically you have to use strategy to either get your castle to 100 or destroy your opponents. Pretty Fun

Finger Twister
This is basically a twister game for the computer using the keyboard. Be warned, it is painful. Not lieing here either.

War torn Iraq has about 26 million residents, a peaceful California perhaps now 35 million. The former is a violent and impoverished landscape, the latter said to be paradise on Earth. But how you envision either place to some degree depends on the eye of the beholder and is predicated on what the daily media appear to make of each.

As a fifth generation Californian, I deeply love this state, but still imagine what the reaction would be if the world awoke each morning to be told that once again there were six more murders, 27 rapes, 38 arsons, 180 robberies, and 360 instances of assault in California yesterday, today, tomorrow, and every day. I wonder if the headlines would scream about "Nearly 200 poor Californians butchered again this month!"

How about a monthly media dose of "600 women raped in February alone!" Or try, "Over 600 violent robberies and assaults in March, with no end in sight!" Those do not even make up all of the state's yearly 200,000 violent acts that law enforcement knows about.

Iraq's judicial system seems a mess. On the eve of the war, Saddam let out 100,000 inmates from his vast prison archipelago. He himself sat in the dock months after his t rial began. But imagine an Iraq with a penal system like California's with 170,000 criminals - an inmate population larger than those of Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Singapore combined. Just to house such a shadow population costs our state nearly $7 billion a year or about the same price of keeping 40,000 Army personnel per year in Iraq. What would be the image of our Golden State if we were reminded each morning, "Another $20 million spent today on housing our criminals"?

Some of California's most recent prison scandals would be easy to sensationalize: "Guards watch as inmates are raped!" Or "Correction officer accused of having sex with under-aged detainee!" And apropos of Saddam's sluggish trial, remember that our home state multiple murderer, Tookie Williams, was finally executed in December 2005 - TWENTY SIX years after he was originally sentenced.

Much is made of the inability to patrol Iraq's borders with Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Turkey. But California has on ly a single border with a foreign nation, not six Yet over 3 million foreigners who sneaked in illegally now live in our state. Worse, there are about 15,000 convicted alien felons incarcerated in our penal system, costing about $500 million a year. Imagine the potential tabloid headlines: "Illegal aliens in state comprise population larger than San Francisco!" or "Drugs, criminals, and smugglers given free pass into California!"

Every year, over 4,000 Californians die in car crashes - more than the number of Americans lost so far in the years of combat operations in Iraq. In some sense, then, our badly maintained roads, and often poorly trained and sometimes intoxicated drivers, are even more lethal than IED's (Improvised Explosive Devices.) Perhaps tomorrow's headline might scream out at us: "300 Californians to perish this month on state highways! Hundreds more will be maimed and crippled!"

In 2001, California had 32 days of power outages, despite paying nearly the highest rates for electricity in the United States. Before complaining about the smoke in Baghdad rising from private generators, think back to the run on generators in California when they were contemplated as a future part of every household's line of defense.

We're told that Iraq's finances are a mess. Yet until recently, so were California's. Two years ago, Governor Schwarzenegger inherited a $38 billion annual budget shortfall. That could have made for strong morning newscast teasers: "Another $100 million borrowed today - $3 billion more in red ink to pile up by month's end!"

So is California comparable to Iraq? Hardly. Yet it could easily be sketched by a reporter intent on doing so as a bankrupt, crime-ridden area with murderous highways, tens of thousands of inmates, with wide-open borders.

I myself recently returned home to California, without incident, from a visit to Iraq's notorious Sunni Triangle. While I was gone, a drug-addicted criminal with a long list of convictions broke into our kitchen at 4 a.m. was surprised by my wife and daughter, and fled with our credit cards, cash, keys, and cell phones. Sometimes I wonder who really was safer that week.

So I was thinking about the price we pay for stuff these days, and it dawned on me. We are willing to pay a lot of money for luxury items but refuse to accept that staple items are subject to inflation just like everything else. Take a look at this graph of the relative price of certain goods:

How many people do you know who must have their Starbucks coffee every morning? Or who guzzle down can after can of Pepsi. Ever take a trip to Cedar Point, a Major League Baseball Game or the zoo? If you have, you better enjoy that bottled water, because you are paying over $15 per gallon of it. When you think about it, you'd be hard-pressed to find any liquid product that you can buy for less than $3.20 per gallon.

We don't mind paying so much for luxury goods because we get some sort of immediate gratification from them. Pepsi goes great with pizza and chicken wings; bottled water at the ball game quenches your thirst; and a Starbucks Java Chip Frappuccino is the most delicious way to wake up in the morning. We want our cars to go but don't want to pay to make them go. In retrospect, it could be a lot worse. Imagine what the world would be like if cars ran on Starbucks lattes instead of gasoline...

The Winner, created by the makers of Family Guy, premieres tonight at 8:30 and another episode at 9:30 on Fox. I think it sounds really funny and am hoping it is as good as Family Guy and the rest of Fox's Sunday Night lineup.

Also a new Family Guy is going to be on at 9:00 between the two new Winner episodes. According to Wikipedia, it is about how Peter takes Quagmire to the airport for work and messes things up, causing Quagmire to lose his job as a pilot. Quagmire can't find another job, so Peter and Cleveland devise a plan to get his old job back. When the plan flops, Quagmire receives advice from his idol, Hugh Hefner.

My first time I got 48/50 states right but it is surprising that I could not finish it off with getting the last two being Montana and Wisconsin.
